To address the needs of companies that do not belong to the HORECA sector, the alliance has designed its own certification process called Plastic Free Menorca Commitment (PFMC). In this case, and given the diversity of activities it covers, this certification is based on developing an environmental policy aimed at contributing to the reduction of plastic pollution.

The PFMC is a recognition process designed to identify, support, and highlight those companies and organisations that are taking real steps towards a less plastic-dependent island.

We aim to empower local stakeholders, inviting them to play a more active role and to create a community committed to reducing the island’s environmental impact.

What is an environmental policy?

An environmental policy is a document or formal statement in which an organisation, company, or entity sets out its principles, commitments, and objectives regarding environmental protection.

Generally, an environmental policy:

  • Defines the organisation’s environmental vision and values.

  • Establishes specific commitments, such as waste reduction, responsible use of natural resources, pollution prevention, and compliance with environmental regulations.

  • Serves as a framework for developing plans, actions, and procedures that minimise the environmental impact of its activities.

  • Communicates to employees, clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders the organisation’s stance on environmental challenges.

What is the certification process like?

The first step is to get in touch with us. If you wish to participate, we arrange a meeting where the technical coordinator asks several questions to understand the characteristics of the activity, the company’s level of environmental awareness, and to promote “commitment” actions.

From this meeting, a report is produced containing all the gathered information, improvement proposals, and other relevant information (links to regulations, key concepts, definitions, etc.). The company is also provided with a guide to draft its commitment policy and, once sent to the technical coordinator, it is reviewed.

Finally, a physical certificate is issued, confirming the successful completion of the process. Likewise, the company becomes part of the Plastic Free Menorca platform, appears on our website and map, and is offered the opportunity to take part in the "0 Plastic Experiences".

Does it have any cost for the company?

No. This certification covers the cost of the technical work carried out by the Plastic Free Menorca technical coordinator. This cost is covered by Menorca Preservation and, therefore, the certification is offered free of charge to companies.
