During the 2021-2025 period, Plastic Free Menorca participated as the certifying entity for Plastic Free Balearics. It was a certification owned by Save The Med that facilitated the reduction of single-use plastics in HORECA sector businesses throughout the Balearic Islands.

This certification came to an end in 2025 and, in these 4 years, from Menorca we have achieved:

  • 62 businesses have taken part.
  • Of these, 24 met the Plastic Free Balearics requirements and obtained the certificate.
  • More than 1,000 products have been analysed.
  • More than 175,000 products have been eliminated or replaced by honest alternatives.

From 2025 onwards, Plastic Free Menorca wishes to continue supporting HORECA sector businesses and offers the Plastic Free Menorca Commitment (hereinafter, CPFM).

The CPFM is an individualised technical support service that makes it possible to identify areas for improvement and real opportunities to reduce plastics within the business.

Unlike the Plastic Free Balearics procedure, the CPFM includes a detailed diagnosis across all areas (kitchen, bar, cleaning, offices…), using the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative tool to obtain a complete and rigorous overview of plastic use.

The business will receive support to draft a plastic pollution reduction policy in line with current legislation, as well as a final report containing data, improvement proposals and practical recommendations to support decision-making.

In addition, Plastic Free Menorca will publicly recognise participating businesses, giving them visibility on the website and social media, and they will have the opportunity to take part in the 0 Plastic Experiences, an initiative promoted by 0 Plastic Menorca.

What is the advisory process with Plastic Free Menorca like?

The first step to take part in the Plastic Free Menorca Commitment (CPFM) is to get in touch with our team. Next, we will send you an online form with questions about plastic use in your activity, which will allow us to prepare the next stage: the diagnosis.

The next step is to carry out an on-site visit. The main aim of this visit is to analyse plastic use in the different areas of the business (kitchen, bar, cleaning, office, etc.), verify the information previously provided and resolve any questions from both the business and our team. During this visit, the data needed to carry out a detailed diagnosis is collected using specific project tools.

Once all the information has been gathered, a diagnosis is prepared, serving as the basis for defining improvement actions and establishing concrete commitments to reduce plastics. Regardless of the outcome, a report is delivered with the diagnosis carried out, recommendations and opportunities for improvement, and the business is supported in drafting its policy in this regard.

If the commitment is formalised and the necessary changes are implemented, where applicable, the business becomes part of the Plastic Free Menorca Commitment, gains visibility on the website and communication channels, and is included in the 0 Plastic Experiences.

What methodology is used?

The methodology used in the Plastic Free Menorca Commitment is based on a structured diagnosis process that makes it possible to analyse plastic use and define improvement actions tailored to each business.

The diagnosis is carried out based on data collection during the technical visit, using internationally recognised tools such as the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative (GTPI) as a reference.

This process makes it possible to:

  • Analyse plastic use in all areas of the business.
  • Verify compliance with current legislation on single-use plastics.
  • Identify opportunities for reduction and substitution.
  • Define concrete commitments within a plastic reduction policy.

In addition, the adoption of reusable alternatives and reduction systems is encouraged, avoiding solutions that do not represent a real improvement (such as replacement with bioplastics).

The diagnosis serves as the basis for subsequent technical support and to facilitate, if the business so wishes, its alignment with international initiatives such as the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative.

Is there any cost for the business?

No. This certification involves the cost of the technical work carried out by the technical manager of Plastic Free Menorca, and this cost is covered by Menorca Preservation and, therefore, is offered free of charge to businesses.
