In 2021, together with the IUCN, we drafted a reduction plan for plastic pollution by 2030 (see document). Within this plan, several actions related to the agricultural sector are defined:

TOURISM ACTION PLAN

2. Reduce plastic production and consumption by 20% on the island by 2030

ACTION 7 - Boosting the production and consumption of local products

Provide training to local producers on how to reduce or eliminate the use of plastics in their products by 2025.
Apply sustainability criteria in the design of local products, which are still developed with few recycling or reuse criteria, by 2030.

WASTE MANAGEMENT ACTION PLAN

1. Reduce plastic leakage by 20% in the waste management sector by 2030

ACTION 3 - Reduce plastic leakage from agriculture

Replace agricultural plastic with a plastic-free alternative by 2030.
Ban problematic or unnecessary agricultural plastic products by 2030.

2. Reduce microplastic and nanoplastic pollution by 25% in the waste management sector by 2030

ACTION 6 - Avoid groundwater pollution by micro and nanoplastics, due to the use of sludge in agriculture

Discourage the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer in agricultural fields with the potential danger of heavy metals and micro and nanoplastics in groundwater.
Assess the use of fertilizers in agriculture and its potential impact on groundwater; conduct a preliminary sludge analysis (ABAQUA) by 2025.

This 2022 and thanks to the support of the IUCN and the Didier and Martine Primat and within the MENORCA PRESERVED program, training will be given to the agricultural sector of the island of Menorca, with two training sessions and a total of 5 teaching hours.

The first session will be aimed at explaining the legislative obligations of the agricultural sector in relation to plastic waste and raising awareness of the main sources of plastic pollution in agriculture, as well as its effects on nature, people's health and the economy. This part of the training will last 2 hours.

The second session will propose a set of good practices to reduce plastic in agricultural activity, as well as show ecodesign experiences to reduce the use of plastic in the marketing of agricultural products. This session will last 3 hours.

The training will be done as a course within the program of MENORCA PRESERVED. It is a continuous training program aimed at the agricultural-livestock sector of Menorca to help in the transition to more sustainable practices in the field.

The training will be given mainly by Marta Pérez López, coordinator of the Menorca Without Plastic Alliance and environmental consultant. Likewise, the punctual participation of people or entities that explain initiatives of good practices carried out is foreseen.

The training will take place in Sa Granja (crta. Maó - Es Grau, KM 0.5) on days:

- 24rt January 2023 - from 12.30-14.30h - Legislative obligations of the agricultural sector in relation to plastic waste and effects of plastic pollution on nature, human health and economy.

31st January 2023 - 10.30-13.30h - Good practices to reduce plastic in agricultural activity and ecodesign experiences to reduce the use of plastic in the marketing of agricultural products.
