Open letter to the Minister of Agriculture: No more excuses, we want plastic-free fruits and vegetables!
From the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, as part of the #LeydeResiduosYA platform, we join the concern of environmental organizations about the lack of action by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the implementation of article 7 of the Royal Decree on Packaging and Packaging Reserves. Two years after its approval, we are still waiting for the publication of the list of fruit and vegetables that should be sold without packaging, a key measure to reduce the unnecessary use of plastics in fruit and vegetables.
The regulations required this list to be available within six months, i.e. by mid-2023. The argument of waiting for the European Commission to issue guidelines cannot justify this inaction. Meanwhile, totally unnecessary plastic packaging continues to be offered in fruits and vegetables that generate a large amount of waste.
We urge the Ministry to act immediately, complying with the provisions of the law and responding to a growing demand from society: to move towards a more sustainable diet free of unnecessary plastics.
