Growing our network of Reusable Beach Items Box

Last year, thanks to the support of IUCN and the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 of the Government of Spain, we launched a pilot test of beach item reuse points, which we have baptized as "PRAPs".

Pilot test in 2023
In 2023, we piloted the installation of PRAPs on beaches and also in companies to analyze the impact on the two types of locations.
We installed 7 PRAPs on beaches and 5 in companies: a car rental company and 4 tourist accommodations. The companies showed great satisfaction with the initiative and showed their desire to repeat the next tourist season.
As for the PRAPs installed on beaches, they were also well received and many people congratulated us on the initiative.
However, some points installed in Son Xoriguer and Cala Blanca suffered  a high number of incidents (mostly rubbish deposited within the PRAP) and, for this reason, they have been removed from the network.

In 2024 we are approaching thirty PRAPs
In 2024 we have manufactured and are installing 15 new PRAPs.
At the moment, we have 18 PRAPs located in companies: car rental, hotels, campsites, agrotourism, apartments and green point.
As for the PRAPs installed on the beaches, those of Cala en Bosc and Santandria in Ciutadella and in Punta Prima and Binibèquer in Sant Lluís have been maintained. In addition, new PRAPs will also be put in place at the end of this month on other beaches in Es Mercadal and Sant Lluís.

Prevention of misuse: we installed new signs
We have designed posters with indications on which objects are suitable for depositing in the PRAP and which should not be left:

Thus, we encourage users to deposit beach items that are in good condition such as umbrellas, buckets, paddles, balls,  or even swimming goggles, diving goggles, tubes. At the same time, we inform that garbage of any kind or objects and articles that are broken should not be deposited, which must be deposited in the appropriate containers or delivered to the relevant recycling points.

We encourage you to check out the network of Beach Item Reuse Points (PRAPs) as well as other plastic free resources on our 0 Plastic Experiences map available here.

This initiative is promoted by Menorca Preservation, thanks to the support received from IUCN, the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 of the Government of Spain in 2023. In addition, the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance has in 2024 funding received from Conservation Collective through its collaboration Depeche Mode & Hublot during the Memento Mori world tour.
