Educational outings to reflect on plastic pollution
Over the past few months, Plastic Free Menorca has organized 5 field trips with schools on the island, aiming to raise students' awareness about the problem of marine plastic pollution. Through direct observation, waste analysis and group reflection, young people have been able to see firsthand the impact of waste on our beaches.
A total of 221 students and teachers participated, helping to collect 113 kg of waste during the different outings. The waste was then classified and analyzed to better understand the types of materials reaching our coasts. In total, 2,882 waste items were recorded.
The 5 most frequent types of waste found were:
Caps: 665 items
Wet wipes: 602 items
Plastic sticks: 302 items
Polystyrene pieces: 293 items
Ropes and strings: 272 items
These activities not only help reduce the presence of plastics on our beaches, but also promote awareness and engagement among new generations for the preservation of our environment.
From Plastic Free Menorca, we would like to thank all the participating schools and @beyondplasticmed for making these outings possible through their support and funding.
We continue working for a plastic-free Menorca!
